how to get ITIL going in my organization?

"Change Management skills are a key to success for successful transition to ITIL compliant organization" said Mr. Kunka from BNY. There were several other tips as well at the nyLIG event.

The Sep event for nyLIG started with some networking among the folks. Vendors were trying to gain eminence during the networking effort.

Later, Oryst Kunka started his session on: ITSM - where are we now and where are headed?

A significant insight was that the ease of ITIL implementation at his organization came from:
  • Tying up of ITIL with regulatory compliance (SOX and CoBIT).
It was a matter of happenstance that BNY had an audit after 9/11 and as a matter of compliance when auditors for a different compliance walked in - they appreciated presence of small chunks of ITIL. Later, the chairman provided executive support for the ITIL implementation.
  • Phase-wise implementation: You can't come in one day and ask everything to change suddenly. Hence, phase-wise implementation is necessary. Make sure you measure value in the work done by having metrics pre-implementation and post-implementation. This helps build credibility.
  • Tactical behavior: Implementing ITIL without using the word "ITIL" in environments where audience may be averse to listening to flavor of the month.

I guess, given the linkages between various other standards/frameworks (e.g. ITIL-COBIT, ITIL-SOX) and them being available in the public domain, one can start influencing their orgs to start implementing ITIL.

If there is adversity due to mention of ITIL - then getting the low-hanging fruits first  is important. This helps gain support from various stake holders. Once that is done, productivity towards change is higher.
